The Jazz Hamilton Arts Foundation (JHAF) is a registered 501(c)(3) public nonprofit dedicated to expanding access to high-quality music education and performance opportunities for underserved and underrepresented youth and communities.
The JHAF’s Notes of Change® Youth Music Program was born from our grassroots beginnings and our groundbreaking Music for All® Community Outreach Initiative. Notes of Change® was inspired by the countless youth we met in underserved communities who did not just want to witness music—they wanted to become the music! Notes of Change® is more than a music program—it is a movement, a response to the voices of young aspiring musicians and creative youth dreaming of careers in the music industry yearning for a place to belong, create, and shine.
For years, Music for All® has been breaking barriers, bringing underrepresented communities into concert halls to experience the transformative power of live symphonic performances infused with the richness of multidisciplinary arts—an opportunity historically reserved for the privileged few. Through this initiative, the Jazz Hamilton Arts Foundation has redefined access to the arts, opening the doors of concert venues to those who had long been left outside, and creating spaces for connection and discovery through the performing arts.
During our Music For All® concerts, we met young people who arrived to the concert halls as bystanders, some tagging along with friends or family members, others quiet and reserved. But as the music filled the room, we watched something extraordinary happen: barriers dissolved, curiosity sparked, and confidence emerged.
By the end of the night, those same shy youth were clapping, laughing, and tapping their feet and swaying in their seats unable to hold back their joy. Some sang along. Others, emboldened by the music, lingering near the stage at the end of our show —approaching our staff, guest artists and music ensemble, eager to touch the saxophone, feel the rhythm of the congas, or sit in the drummer’s chair just to hold the sticks. What began as quiet observation had transformed into undeniable hunger to participate. And then came the moment that changed everything: “Can we have a program just for us?”
Over and over again, this sentiment was repeatedly expressed by youth in every city we visited. In city after city, we saw the same spark ignite in youth eyes; the same longing to be more than just spectators; the same desired to belong–just as we experienced during our grassroots beginnings. That simple but powerful request became the heartbeat of our Notes of Change® Youth Music Program!
Notes of Change® empowers underrepresented youth through transformative music and mentorship experiences that nurture artistic talent, build confidence, and inspire civic engagement. By providing free access to high-quality arts education and performance opportunities, we create a pathway for young voices to be heard, talents to be celebrated, and futures to be transformed.
We envision a vibrant, transformative artistic community where young musicians and arts performers from all backgrounds experience individualized growth and collective teamwork, inspiring excellence, resilience, and unity through the power of music.
